Whatever your age, if you want to break into the tech sector, you can !!

In this week’s article, I will share my opinion on how the concept of age is approached in the Tech sector.

Missy and I glazing in our future in tech

A few weeks back (end of January), I celebrated another year around the sun. I could not stop reflecting on my present and future within the Tech world.

Since graduating back in 2008, I have been involved in the fin-tech world, but it has only been two years since I became a software engineer, leaving behind more than a decade of experience in the Finance world.

Like some of you, I spend quite some time on Twitter (which I should reduce), following Tech leaders, trying to connect with like-minded people, and learning new things.

In this endeavor, I couldn’t help to realize that age is quite a recurring subject in many conversions. There is this focus on how early someone started programming or how young someone achieved something.

Let me be clear here; I am not trying to take away anything from someone who has accomplished such feats in just a few years.

My goal here is to tell anyone who is dreaming about switching to the tech world but wondering that it might be too late, that it is never too late, whatever if you are 12 or 40 or 65 years old.

As human beings, we naturally tend to compare ourselves to others, which can be quite demoralizing or depressing at times (I have personally been there). I always try to remind myself that I compete only with myself, and I try to see other people’s achievements as a pure source of motivation.

Let us celebrate any 15-year-old tech trailblazers, but we should also celebrate 50 years (or any ages) old teachers, nurses, construction workers who decided to get out of their confront zone to start a new career in Tech.

One of my favorite rappers Michael Santiago Render, aka Killer Mike, once said:

Now is the time to Plot, Plan, Strategize, Organize and Mobilize.

So if you are looking into switching to the tech world, I encourage you to start planning, strategizing, and orchestrating your move starting now!!
